when temptation gets in the way of survival

My fifth day in Paris greeted me with a rare blue sky and crisp, clear air - such a perfect weather in this city cannot go unnoticed by a seasoned busker. Despite the construction work on the rail that left my neighboring vicinities practically a public transportation desert, I somehow willed my way to the busking mecca of Montmartre in time for the lunch rush hour.

The busking conditions were prime: no competitors were within sight and the Place du Tertre was packed with dazed tourists in polo shirts and tennis shoes. Nestled in amongst the many painters and cartoonists, I played through my usual rep (with more emphasis on Frenchness) for about two hours without rest. By mid-afternoon, my case was finally closed with an astounding harvest of 96,59€.

I should not have taken the scenic route home. Walking down the streets of Marais towards the Seine, I was surrounded on both sides by colorful "Solde" (sale) shop signs like glorious olympics flags. One of the best and most unfortunate aspects of my music program is that every year it coincides with the city-wide clothing sale that lasts throughout July. The rest of my evening I leave up to your imaginations, but suffice it to say I dined a modest meal but in style.
